Early on in the movie Batman Begins, Morgan Freeman shows Christian Bale (aka Batman) a potpourri of gadgets that his company is working on. One of those items was called a memory cloth, which Morgan Freeman demonstrated with the following narration:
It's called memory cloth. Notice anything? Regularly flexible. But put a current through it...molecules realign. It becomes rigid.
This is the material that Bale used to make Batman's cape, which was normally malleable, but when it had an electric current to it would form a hard shape that the superhero used in order to glide.
